Make sure your mail server settings were set up correctly in "Tools -> Account Settings -> Edit -> Servers Settings". Ok. I'm not sure why the difference (unless Thunderbird just used a generic "timed out" message instead of notifying the specific type of timeout - just thought of that when I read your last comment). Glad I didn't downvote. :) I'd have to take it back. Still not sure you're right, but at least I can't say for sure you're wrong.
